The Music List of 2011

Hello Lovelies!

Hope you had an awesome Christmas! I certainly had! First day: we had an amazing dinner with my family. My uncle is a great cook and always makes special things we never eat. Yesterday (Boxing Day) were we in Amsterdam for a walk. I love Amsterdam! There's so much you can see and discover! At home we had a marvelous dinner and sang on my new Wii Game (U-Sing). For those who didn't know: I love singing! And I know I'm not the best singer in the world, I just like to do it for fun :)

Ok, that was Christmas 2011. During my Christmas Break I'll try to blog everyday, but I might get addicted to the Wii and my new Sims 3 game as well ;-) Here's the first blog of today!

I had such a great year, when we talk about music, I have been to lots of concerts and festivals and discovered so many new bands and talented artists! And now I would love to introduce to you: LISA's top music list of 2011! I'll show you the 10 best albums of this year, the 5 best songs, best male, best female and best new band of 2011! You can compare it with the MTV Awards besides I stay in the indie rock scene. So, let's get started! Oh, and if you don't see your favourite band please give me a call and tell me why that band or record has got to be on that list!

These things made me happy (this week)

'Mylo Xyloto' the new album from one of the biggest bands of the world Coldplay is released today!

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni welcomed their first child and gave her a beautiful name: Guilia.

My cousin Rens turns 21 this Sunday :)

Because of the Fall Vacation here in Holland I got 2 days off (Monday and today) And I used it very wisely (well I actually had to work for school) but instead me, Amber and my mom went out shopping at Amstelveen and bought really nice things.

Pretty Little Liars is back! Wednesday October 19, was the new episode on tv in America. Unfortunately, it looks like it still doesn't coming to Holland :( But I'm watching all the episodes on internet and I'm ok with that :)

I want Instagram for Android! That's what I said this week and it turns out they've listened to me because it's coming! :) .. But they don't know when :( Untill that moment comes I discovered something else: Monome, a very cool app where you can give your pictures a boost! Find it out yourself ;-)

What also happened on Wednesday: In the morning, when I was on my work, I opened Facebook and saw: DUTCH BLOGGER SHOWS SOME LOVE! THANK YOU LISA! from the 'Band Of The Month': The Dears! OMG, I was so happy! I could not believe it, my name, my blog.. How cool is that! I had over 170 visitors that day! So that's probably the thing that made me happy the most! (A)

BOTM #2: The Dears

BOTM: Oftewel "Band Of The Month" is een nieuwe maandelijkse column waarin ik verschillende bands en artiesten aan je voorstel. Ik laat je kennis maken met de geschiedenis en het ontstaan van de band, de cd's die ze hebben uitgebracht en natuurlijk een paar video's zodat je een impressie krijgt. Deze maand in BOTM: The Dears!



Ik wil bij deze heel graag de indie rock band The Dears aan jullie voorstellen. Deze muziek maakte op mij zoveel indruk dat een blog niet uitgesloten kon blijven.



The Dears is een Canadese rockband uit Montreal gevormd in 1995. Ze bestaan dus al behoorlijk lang! Pas 5 jaar later (2000) brachten zij hun debutalbum; "End Of A Hollywood Bedtime Story" uit. Kenmerkend voor het album waren de donkere teksten en de grauwe stem van zanger Murray Lightburn. Een paar jaar later (2001/2002) bracht The Dears een paar EP's uit en hun tweede studioalbum: "No Cities Left" werd gereleased in 2003. Toen begon het aardig te lopen allemaal. Ze kregen naamsbekendheid en stonden een aantal keer op grote festivals. In 2005 zijn ze weer de studio ingedoken en leverde: "Gang Of Losers" af in 2006. Het derde album werd goed ontvangen door de media en The Dears mocht de 2007 - Polaris Music Prize in ontvangst nemen. Het vierde album: "Missiles" werd kort daarna uitgebracht in 2008. En ook hun meest recente album: "Degeneration Street" (februari dit jaar) was genomineerd voor grote awards.



Zoals je op de eerste foto kunt zien is The Dears een grote band en bestaat uit veel muzikanten. Echter zijn er veel vervangen en was de band continu in beweging. De enige 2 die het vanaf het begin hebben volgehouden zijn zanger Murray Lightburn en toetsenist Natalia Yanchak. Naast hun eigen optredens waren ze ook vaak op tournee met andere grote namen als; Sloan, The Tragically Hip, Keane, The Secret Machines en Morrissey. Lightburn noemt de stijl van The Dears een mix tussen The Smiths en Serge Gainsbourg. En dat waren dan ook grote inspiratiebronnen voor hen. Ook vindt critici de stem van Lightburn vaag iets weg hebben van dat van Damon Albarn (zanger Blur). De grauwe (toch wel donkere) muziek en teksten komen flink overeen met bands als Radiohead, Jethro Tull en Genesis. Mensen die The Dears live hebben gezien weten niet wat ze meemaken en staan versteld van hun kunnen. Het moge duidelijk zijn, de muziek van The Dears is een belevenis en komt hard, heel hard bij men binnen.



Zo dus ook bij mij. Ook deze band heb ik aan mijn vader te danken. Hij was er zo laaiend enthousiast over dat ik niet kon wachten te beginnen met luisteren! Het is nu 3 maanden geleden ong. dat ik hun laatste Degeneration Street voor het eerst hoorde. Ik was wel even in shock. Zo goed vond ik het. Nu snapte ik waarom mijn vader zo hysterisch deed. Alle nummers kwamen bij me binnen en ik vond het meteen al het beste album van 2011. Toch is het niet voor iedereen weggelegd. Ik snap dat als je van popliedjes houdt dit niet een band is wat je zal draaien of naartoe gaat op een festival. Houdt je wel van zware muziek en bands als Doves, Muse, Saybia, Arcade Fire en White Lies dan is het luisteren naar deze band het zeker waard!



Ik hoop in ieder geval nog steeds heel erg op een tour door Europa dit jaar. Want ik denk dat als je dit live hebt gezien je even weer hersteld moet worden en beseffen wat je zojuist hebt meegemaakt.
